Companies spend time and effort in creating a Vision – a Big Picture view for themselves. They define growth parameters, values and policies and make sure it is kept alive and current. It is necessary for survival and progress. It is reviewed as often as needed. They need to be agile or else they fade. Every employee at some level is influenced by these processes and make it part of their process at work, some take it home too and make it part of their way of thinking and living. There is a method needed to the madness and having no plan doesn’t cut it – can you imagine what it is like to work with managers and leaders who have “no plan, no strategy, no process?”. This is not a philosophical question. How different can it be when it comes to determining the quality of one’s own life?
Professional sportspersons – swimmers, athletes, runners, gymnasts etc. or formula 1 racers for example: they all have a Big Picture, a master goal that is timed, measured and tracked to milliseconds or levels of precision needed to achieve that Big Picture view they have imagined for themselves. It influences what they need to be doing, in order for it to be achieved. It helps define how they spend their time, day after day, doing exactly what is needed to achieve that master goal. In the light of that Big Picture; time, energy and decision making become easy to align and expend. It is easy to see what is purposeful and what is not, simply because of directing time and energy into a definitive purpose.
